Young Feminist Media Fellowship For Storytellers!

Are you a feminist storyteller? Do you believe in the power of stories reaching millions? Are you a budding writer, artist or videographer? Then this fellowship opportunity is just the right thing for you!

FRIDA | The Young Feminist Fund, in Partnership with The WMC FBOMB, invites Applications from young and  budding storytellers to apply to its pilot project Young Feminist Media Fellowship

The fellowship is an opportunity to gain insight into global feminist issues, receive guidance and feedback from experienced feminist journalists and an opportunity for the writers to have their stories published in a publication that has a worldwide readership.

Eligibility

You are eligible to apply for this fellowship if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are a young feminist (between the age of 18 and 30) with proven interest or activism in gender-based issues in the local, national or in international contexts
  • You are a budding writer, publisher, visual artist or videographer.
  • You will have some proven experience and have some sample pieces of your previous work to demonstrate it.
  • You may be based anywhere in the world, but should be from a Global South country (i.e. not Western Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand) and willing to travel in the pursuit of the story. Previous experience in journalism, writing, blogging, sketching, designing is welcome, but not compulsory.
  • You are proficient in the English language as the writing/designing will be done in English only.

Benefits

The fellow is expected to work part-time and will be paid a stipend of USD 500 USD for the three-month duration of the fellowship. As a fellow, you will be expected to decide how you’d like to utilize the stipend money in pursuit of your story.

Global Campus Visual Contest for photographers and videomakers

The visual contest will be open from 1st March and will accept submissions through 4th May 2018The Global Campus Visual Contest originates from the belief that photography and videos are powerful tools that can raise awareness and push for social change. It is also aimed to create a network of artists, intellectuals, and professionals interested in strengthening the protection of human rights and the promotion of democracy and peace.

“Diversity and Inclusion”.

The Jury

An international jury comprised of renowned international photographers such as Nick Dazinger, Maja Nydal Eriksen, and experts in media and social campaigns such as Una Bejtovic and from academia such as Rod Stoneman, Emeritus Professor at the National University of Galway, Ireland, will select the best photos and videos.

The Selection

The best pictures and short videos could receive special mentions by the partners of the contest and will be presented at the events of the Regional Masters of the Global Campus in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Caucasus, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa, South East Europe.

This initiative is funded by the European Union and receives the patronage of the United Nations Regional Information centre for Western Europe (UNRIC).

African Development Bank writing competition for a fully funded trip to Korea

As an African organization serving Africans, the African Development Bank’s dream is to build today a better future for Africa tomorrow.

Ahead of the Annual Meetings, that will be held on the theme “Accelerating Africa’s Industrialization”, in Busan, Korea, in May 2018, the bank have launched a writing competition for young Africans to unlock creativity on #Africaofmydream

  • Must hold a valid passport, or be able to obtain one prior to attending the Annual Meetings.
  • Must be a citizen of one of the 54 African countries.
  • Must not be older than 29 years old as of May 31, 2018 to enter the Contest;
  • Entries must be submitted in English or French (the African Development Bank’s official languages).
  • Young Media Practitioners: Must submit an unpublished piece no longer than 1,000 words, related to the contest’s theme.
  • Young Contestants: Must submit an essay, article or creative writing piece, no longer than 1,000 words, related to the contest’s theme.

In addition to their submitted pieces, participants will be required to submit a proof of identity – passport, birth certificate or national id card.

2018 GSK-Kellogg-USAID Global Health Case Competition in London

Deadline: 22nd April,2018

The GSK | Kellogg | USAID Global Health Case Competition brings together business students from around the world to discuss global health challenges. Students will be placed into teams and, together, develop a proposed solution to a given global health case study that they will then present to a panel of judges. Students will also participate in site visits to local partners from both the public and private sectors (e.g., McKinsey & Company, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, social enterprises, etc.).

Goals

  • Build business-minded global health capacity in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the United States
  • Generate new thinking and solutions to real world global health challenges
  • Identify (business/private sector) talent in the global health space
  • Raise awareness and interest in global health opportunities and challenges among the business community
  • Build relationships between students and schools across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the United States
  • Generate new global health case studies to be used in business school curriculum globally

Offer

All students accepted to the competition will be fully funded. The event will be held at GSK’s headquarters at 980 Great West Road, London, UK.  GSK will generously provide expenses to fund travel to and from the event, and lodging/food expenses in London. CERN Non-Member State Postdoc Fellowship Programme (Theoretical Physics) for Autumn 2018

Eligibility: 

  • You should NOT be a national of a CERN Member State. Nationals from the CERN Member States (irrespective of their current place of study and/or residence) should apply to the ‘standard’ Fellowship Programme(link is external).
  • You have a PhD in Theoretical Physics (or are about to finish your thesis) and are looking for a postdoctoral position.
  • You have a maximum of 10 years of research experience after the degree which gives access to doctoral programmes (MSc or equivalent).

CERN Post Career Break Fellowship,2018

Have you taken time out for personal reasons from your career in science or engineering? Would you be interested in returning to work if you could?

CERN has launched a programme to offer full-time or part-time Fellowships to science and engineering graduates wishing to re-start their careers. This is an outstanding chance for you to update your knowledge and skills working for up to three years in an international environment at the forefront of research.

Eligibility:

  • You have been on a career break for personal reasons such as family or caring responsibilities or health issues for at least 2 years.
    – Periods of unemployment do not count as a career break within this programme.
    – A change in the field from your studies or in the direction of your career does not constitute a career break within the spirit of our programme.
    – Students are not eligible for this programme.
  • You have a Masters level diploma or PhD with between 4 and 10 years relevant experience after the MSc (Senior Fellow profile), if you are applying in experimental or theoretical physics, you have a PhD (or are about to finish your thesis) OR
  • you have a BSc or technical engineer diploma with no more than 4 years relevant experience (Junior Fellow profile). Junior Fellows must be nationals of one of CERN’s Member States.

Please note that an individual may only benefit from Fellow status at CERN for a maximum of 36 months. The minimum duration of a Fellow contract is 6 months.

Candidates who are registered as CERN Users may be asked to justify how their status relates to their application.

British Council Story Making West Africa Workshop,2018

British Council in collaboration with the African Storybook Initiative invites writers and illustrators to participate in a residential workshop for the production of mother-tongue based multilingual storybooks. The workshop is a component of the broader Story Making West Africa project which aims to promote the arts, education and mother-tongue based multilingual education in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Workshop Output 1: Up to 20 draft story manuscripts with ten manuscripts selected for publishing. Each manuscript will consist of 12-page stories in at least two languages (an indigenous African language and English).

Workshop Output 2: Illustrators draw and colour five sets of illustrations (that is, five story manuscripts).

WORKSHOP DETAILS

The 5-day workshop will bring together participants in Abuja, Nigeria from 12 to 16 March 2018 from Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Ghana and will be facilitated by trainers from the African Storybook initiative. The workshop will be fully funded by the British Council inclusive of travel, accommodation and a small stipend as per diems.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applications will be evaluated against the following criteria:

Story Writers

Please complete the online application formwith your details and a statement of motivation describing how you meet these criteria:

  • Can write (speak and read) competently in 2 (or more) languages: an indigenous African language and English. Writers of the following languages are strongly encouraged to apply: Pidgin, Ashanti Twi, Ga, Krio, Mende, Themne, Limba, Pulaar, Wolof, Kanuri, Fulfulde, Ijaw or Igbo; other languages will be considered. A competent writer pays attention to these aspects of written language: style and clarity of expression, vocabulary choices, creative and imaginative language use, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Have at least 2 years of experience as a language or literacy educator – e.g. teacher, librarian, lecturer (or other relevant educational work with young children and/or language teaching). It will be an advantage if you have a degree or diploma in one of the following areas: Education, Language / Literature, or Transl
  • Have computer literacy skills – are comfortable typing on a keyboard (standard or most accepted orthography of the language) and using Microsoft Word (or other word processing program).
  • Have not previously published a storybook for children
  • Have an original idea for a story or a character or know a traditional indigenous story.
  • Allow your work to be released under a Creative Commons Attributions Licensewhich allows your work to be used  freely by others.
  • Would like to work with other participants to develop, write and translate openly licensed stories.

NLNG: The Literary Criticism 2018 Award for N1,000,000

Deadline: 29th March, 2018.

The Literary Criticism Award yearly prize is endowed by Nigeria LNG (NLNG) Limited to honour the author of the best work. To encourage literary criticism, the Advisory Board of the Nigeria Prize for Literature will reward one critic with the sum of N1,000,000.00

Submission Procedure

  • Since the aim is to promote Nigerian literature in the world, the prize will be open to literary critics from all over the world. Special considerations shall be given to critical essays on new writings in Nigerian Literature.
  • Contestants shall send in three critical essays published in major scholarly journals. Such journals shall have a proven track record of dedication to excellence and must have international circulation.
  • No critical essay previously submitted for this competition may be considered at a later date, even if major revisions of it have been made.
  • Mere manuscripts will not be considered. Entries not submitted by the deadline and according to stated conditions shall not be considered.
  • Only entries published in the year of the competition or within three years before then shall be considered.
  • No member of the Advisory Board or Panel of Judges can enter their essay(s) for the literary criticism award in the year they are serving.

Announcement and Public Presentation of Winners

  • The Winners will normally be announced in October and will be presented to the public on a later date.
