Deadline: 18th March 2018

The Resilient Roots initiative is looking for partners in a range of countries to design and rollout innovative accountability pilot projects over an 18-month period. These pilot projects will examine the factors which increase public support and trust in civil society organisations, to identify different pathways to greater, longer-lasting efficacy and legitimacy.

Offer:

An initial grant of up to US $30,000 to cover your organisation’s costs to implement the pilot project, with the opportunity to access further resources for the continuation and
consolidation of this work
• Hands-on guidance to develop the pilot project proposal into a comprehensive implementation plan, along with tailored training and resources to build the specific
skills needed to undertake the pilot project
• Ongoing, regular support with project implementation, including the use of co-created
methodologies for measuring constituent-based accountability and resilience
• Being part of an active community of organisations working on constituent-driven
accountability approaches, focused on peer-to-peer learning and problem solving
• Promotion of your work to a global audience via case studies, blog posts and learning
resources, along with opportunities to connect with a wider network of experts and
practitioners working on accountability and resilience. However should you wish, this
need not include specific details about your organisation

Applications:

Review the guidelines in the Open Call for Proposals, paying particular attention to the ‘What are we looking for?’ and ‘Who is this for?’ sections.

If you would then like to apply, please complete the initial application form.

Applications will be reviewed as soon as they are received and some grants may be awarded before this deadline.

Call For Applications: Hurford Youth Fellow Program

Building Young Activists’ Leadership Skills

The World Movement for Democracy and the International Forum for Democratic Studies at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) invite you to apply for the Hurford Youth Fellows Program in Washington, DC. Youth leaders from around the world will be considered for two positions throughout the year. For a period of four months, each fellow will have the opportunity to build his or her leadership and organizational skills and benefit from and contribute to the development of the World Movement for Democracy and World Youth Movement in particular.

Fellows will be expected to organize online discussion to generate active engagement among youth activists around the world.  Hurford Youth Fellows will engage in strategic meetings; conduct research; and organize and lead presentations, and information-sharing sessions on the following specific democracy themes:

Defending Democratic Space

Freedoms are increasingly restricted to people who wish to voice their concerns, come together, and address those concerns by engaging stakeholders. In both physical and digital spaces, they face limitations on where they can meet, how they can interact, and what they can say or do. This is particularly true under authoritarian regimes, but also under new and established democracies where minority views are marginalized. As a result, citizens have less influence in political processes that impact their lives and are unable to hold their governments accountable. CLICK HERE to learn more about the World Movement for Democracy’s initiatives, activities, and alerts that support ‘Defending Democratic Space.’

Promoting Inclusive Governance

The World Movement aims to strengthen inclusive democratic governance with an emphasis on empowering emerging leaders that are committed to democratic principles. As part of this effort, the World Movement facilitates engagement among emerging leaders from civil society and political parties; exploring constructive ways to enhance their political participation; building effective partnerships between civil society, government, and the private sector; and sustaining democratic movements that influence policy-making and institutional reforms. CLICK HERE to learn more about the World Movement for Democracy’s initiatives, activities, and alerts that support ‘Promoting Inclusive Governance.’

Strengthening Democratic Leadership

The next generation of democratic leadership plays a crucial role in sustaining and advancing democracy.  The World Movement believes in the importance of inter-generational dialogue and facilitates exchange of ideas and experiences between seasoned leaders and emerging leaders. CLICK HERE to learn more about the World Movement for Democracy’s initiatives, activities, and news and alerts that support ‘Strengthening Democratic Leadership.’

Youth leaders up to the age of 30 with a demonstrated interest in the advancement of democracy are welcome to apply; particularly those affiliated with democracy/civil society organizations are especially encouraged. A monthly cost of living stipend and roundtrip airfare will be provided by the Program.

Call for Applications: Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowship

The Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowship Program is a globally competitive fellowship program for early and mid-career researchers aiming at improving the learning, development and living conditions of children and youth or contributing to one of the Jacobs Foundation’s thematic priorities. This includes, but is not limited to educational sciences, psychology, economics, sociology, family studies, media studies, political sciences, linguistics, neurosciences, and medical sciences.

Fellowships are awarded to the most highly talented and innovative young scholars and mid-career researchers. Funds from Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowships are awarded directly to the fellow’s institution and may be used over a three-year period by the fellow to partially cover the fellow’s salary and for any activity supporting the fellow’s research, such as assistant salaries, equipment, technical assistance, professional travel, or trainee support.

Scholars who engage in interdisciplinary work on individual development and learning of children and youth, and who seek to combine genetic, epigenetic, neurobiological, behavioral and social levels of analysis, are particularly encouraged to apply.

Besides providing fellows with independent and competitive funding, the program offers a wide range of non-financial benefits. Fellows are encouraged to interact with each other and make use of the Jacobs Foundation’s Conference Center Marbach Castle at Lake Constance (Germany) for short-term group retreats and workshops. Networking and alumni events will enrich the fellowships.

Fellows are selected on the basis of their research accomplishments, creativity, and potential to become leaders in the scientific community through their contributions to the field of child and youth development. International relevance of the fellow’s planned work, the alignment of planned projects with the goals of the Jacobs Foundation, and the willingness to identify with our aims and to engage actively with us will also be selection criteria.

Call for Applications, the African Women Entrepreneurship Cooperative (AWEC) 2018

The Challenge

Africa leads the world in the number of women starting businesses, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. Many experts, including the World Economic Forum and the World Bank, believe that the 21st century is Africa’s century and that its economic future is dependent on the success of women entrepreneurs.

However, these same experts and the Center for Global Enterprise agree that women entrepreneurs in Africa face barriers that threaten to stifle innovation and slow the growth needed to propel their businesses and local economies. These challenges include:

  • Unequal access to business education, management training
  • Lack of high-quality, affordable, and online learning options
  • Social norms and familial responsibilities
  • Lack of networking opportunities and peer groups
  • Unequal access to financial management training and capital

Changing Lives Through Skills Training, Mentorship, and Peer Networks

CGE developed the African Women Entrepreneurship Cooperative (AWEC) in response to those challenges and to feedback from African alumni of its online learning courses who requested more in-depth training on critical management topics, longer program engagement and mentorship, and a sustained peer network.

AWEC one-of-a-kind, 12-month training program that builds a pan-African community of women entrepreneurs and business owners, empowering them with strategy, leadership and business management skills needed for growth and economic advancement. Additional details about the core program are available on our Program page.

Who Should Apply

AWEC is designed for women from across Africa and its diaspora who run startup or growth stage companies in any industry. Those who are interested in increasing their business management skills and growing their networks are encouraged to apply for the inaugural program year.

Aspiring entrepreneurs with business experience, an idea for a venture, and a passion for entrepreneurship are also eligible for the program.

The application period opens on 31 January 2018 and the program begins on 3 April 2018.
